Day trip to Gori

For our second day in Tbilisi we decided on taking a day trip. We wanted to visit Gori which is the birthplace of Stalin, Pete being a history buff was keen to go to the Stalin museum there.

We had thought of catching the train but when I checked in the morning it appeared the train was sold out so we had to go by mini bus, all good, this is a cheap option albeit somewhat tricky to work out!

We caught the metro to Didube station where we had to catch the mini bus. We hunted to find one going to Gori and soon found a driver who confirmed Gori would be on his route.

We headed off. The beauty of travel these days is you can track your route on google maps, so as we approached the turn off to Gori we were a little bemused when we did not turn off!

There was another exit to come so we did not stress, but once we passed the second exit I got up and asked the driver if he was stopping at Gori, he nodded and pointed and said - yes, Gori. About 500m down the road he pulled up on the edge of the highway and said Gori, we got off, of course we were somewhat a distance from town, it was raining ever so slightly, looks like we got stooged!

We proceeded to walk into Gori (later when back in a WiFi zone I worked out we were dropped off 5km from the centre of town!

Lucky as we were walking into town another mini bus was coming along that was heading to the town centre, we hopped on and made our way into town! Thankfully this saved us a long walk in the rain on the edge of a muddy road!

Once in Gori we headed to the Stalin museum where Pete was my personal guide as all the signs were in Russian or Georgian.

It was an interesting museum, but somewhat a glorification of a man who was one of the biggest tyrants of the 21st century!

After visiting the museum we grabbed a yummy cheesy snack for lunch and then decided to head back to Tbilisi although we had planned on another stop on the way back, we decided not to push our luck given our trip on the way out!
