Day trip to Vardzia and Akhaltsikhe

We have 2 nights in Borjomi and had always planned the trip this way to enable us to do a day trip to Vardzia and Akhaltsikhe.

We had toyed with the idea of taking local transport but it seemed a little tedious and time consuming so we ended up deciding to get a driver.

This was easily organised as the drivers here who do tours tend to place themselves around town with little signs on there car showing the day trip destinations available.

We found a driver quite quickly and were on our way before 10am.

The trip to Vardzia is about 2 hours, it's along quite a windy road but through beautiful countryside that made me feel like I was in Tasmania or possible England or Ireland, very lush and green with a fast flowing river that looked perfect for a bit of white water rafting!

We arrived in Vardzia a bit before 12 and spent just under 2 hours exploring the cave monastery. This monastery was carved into the rock back in the 12th century. There are over 400 rooms with more still being discovered. We had a great time wandering through the caves and exploring some small tunnels that led to hidden rooms deep within the rocky mountainside!
